# Strata Studio 16 review: a desktop you can carry

The Strata Studio 16 is built for people who make things: video editors, photographers, 3D artists and developers. It is big, heavy and loud under load. It is also the fastest laptop we have tested, with the best screen.

## Design and build

This is a 2.3 kg laptop, and it feels like one. The aluminium body is stiff, and the hinge is strong. You get a full set of ports: two Thunderbolt 5, two USB-A, HDMI 2.1, an SD card reader and a headphone jack. Nothing needs an adapter.

## Display

The 16-inch mini-LED panel is superb. It reaches 1,600 nits for HDR, covers the P3 and Adobe RGB colour ranges and came out of the box with near-perfect colour accuracy. For grading video or checking prints, this is as good as a laptop screen gets.

## Performance

With the Strata X chip and 64 GB of memory, our test unit exported a 10-minute 4K project in 2 minutes 50 seconds. A 3D scene that takes 14 minutes on the Aerobook took under 4\. It also runs local AI models at usable speeds.

Under heavy load, the fans reach 46 decibels, which is clearly audible. In normal work, they stay off.

## Keyboard and speakers

The keyboard has deep travel and a number pad. The six speakers are the best we have heard in a laptop, with real bass and a wide sound. You can check a mix on them, roughly.

## Battery life

Light work gives about 11 hours. A video export on battery drains about 25% in 20 minutes. The 180 W charger is large, so count it as part of the weight.

## A production week

We gave the Strata Studio 16 to a video editor for a week of real client work: a 22-minute documentary cut from 6K footage, with colour grading and sound. On her own two-year-old laptop, the timeline needs lower-quality previews and exports take most of a lunch break. On the Strata, she edited at full quality, scrubbed without dropped frames and exported the final film in under seven minutes.

A photographer on the team imported 1,800 RAW files from a wedding through the built-in SD card reader, generated previews in four minutes and ran an AI noise filter on 300 of them in the time it took to make coffee. A developer built a large project in about a third of the time his work machine takes.

Everyone agreed on two things. It is the fastest laptop they have used, and they would not want to carry it every day.

## Heat and noise

Under sustained load, the area above the keyboard reaches 46°C, warm but not painful, and the palm rest stays cool. The fans produce a low rush of air, not a whine. You can choose a quiet mode that caps fan speed and costs about 12% in performance, which is a good trade in a shared room.

## How it compares

Its closest rival has a slightly faster graphics chip and a dimmer screen with worse colour. A desktop computer with the same power costs about $700 less and needs a monitor, a desk and a wall socket. The Aerobook 14 does everyday work just as well in half the weight, and it falls far behind as soon as the work is heavy.

## Which version to buy

The $2,199 base model has 32 GB of memory and 1 TB of storage. For 4K video and photo work, that is enough. For 6K or 8K video, 3D work and local AI models, choose 64 GB. Storage upgrades are expensive, and the two Thunderbolt 5 ports make a fast external drive almost as quick.

## Verdict

The Strata Studio 16 is a desktop computer you can carry. If your work is limited by your computer, it will pay for itself.

If your work is mail, documents and the web, you will pay for power you never use and carry weight you do not need. The Aerobook 14 is the better choice for that.
